You can find arguments agains using black/white in Dave A. Ricks - Big Business Blunders: Mistakes in Multinational Marketing/dp/0256028508[^]: One European vendor going to Asia, focusing on an image of pure white, clean and sound. Only that in many Asian cultures, white color symbolizes death (the way black does in most Western cultures).
By that color codex, a whitelist should be a list of dead alternatives or proposals. Maybe blacklist/whitelist isn't perfect in an international context.

A good point.
But for a logical thinking person there is no problem, because whitelist is not "white list". It's a single word that means something specific, so the fact that "white" is a colour should not even be a consideration. The fact that the term may have originated based on colours is irrelevant to the meaning or usage.
Also, is anything perfect. Someone can always find a flaw. People love arguing and they can find an argument in damn near anything.

This is very minor compared to a lot of what is going on. It might actually be ingenious timing because this sounds so small compared to a lot of other demands out there.

This happened to me 15 years ago developing a distributed system. Primary control unit was the master, the others were slaves. Changed to master and expansion units. It's all about symbolism over substance.

If it was just "some people" preferring to use a different term then that wouldn't be an issue. But when a change is effectively forced upon everybody then there should be a decent reason to justify it. It's not like changes like this are easy and free. What about any 3rd party documentation on the process of using GitHub, or any website tutorial on how to use a "master" repo?

I can not believe this has to be explained to you. For you to argue against this means you are an active contributor to the problem.

I fail to see how a discussion about the connections between 2 words crosses any lines. Sure, racism is a "hot topic" but do you not think people refusing to even hold an open and critical debate about it is perhaps part of the reason it even still exists?

Yeah, I didn't pick up on any sarcasm. And he probably would have told me if I had misunderstood.
I don't understand why so many people find it hard to have an unbiased conversation. I guess perhaps some people don't really understand their own opinions (or those they got from somebody else) to be able to defend them, so they back out from fear of being made to look a fool. And to be clear, this comment isn't specifically about Rick.

Wow Rick, this seems to be hitting you hard.
I think what musefan's trying to say is that we still have words like master bedroom, master's degree (I'm a Master of Arts myself), master blacksmith/carpenter/whatever profession, headmaster, a master as in teacher and a whole lot more.
None of them have anything to do with slavery.
So why would Git(Hub)'s master be related to slavery?
In IT we probably give it the master/slave connotation, but personally I've never linked that to enslaving black people either because that's the last thing on my mind.
In any case, Git(Hub) only has the word master, but not slave, so the link to slavery is at best very implicit and to most of us it simply doesn't exist.
Changing a "regular" word doesn't solve any real problems like how black people stay behind in education, finding work and buying houses while being over represented in jail as a result of racism.
And at this point it's so forced that I'm afraid it does more harm than good because white people feel attacked.
Meanwhile, changing the default branch name may break scripts and pipelines and such so it will hurt for some developers and companies.
Hopefully I was able to explain my point without crossing any lines.
If you have a different opinion I'd be interested in hearing it.

I wasn't trying to claim a correct view of any kind, I simply wanted to provoke thought as to the why of it all. After all, you can't solve problems until you understand them.

This is a pretty important point. The Black Lives Matter movement has really picked up traction on a massive scale, and people are ready to listen. But people get bored easy, and the attention of the people who are listening will be lost if the moment isn't seized now. Don't abuse the opportunity that has been given by watering it down with meaningless complaints about harmless words.
That said, unfortunately the people listening probably aren't the ones that need convincing in the first place.
Things like this take a long time to take affect, I am talking generations. I think it would be fair to say that the world has already made huge leaps forward in all terms of equality over the last few decades. I would even be tempted to put forward the argument that the problem has already been solved, we just need to wait a few generations until the weeds die out.

Or maybe some really are offended by it, which also wouldn't surprise me, although the majority probably couldn't care less about the word master.
I think the same about white people though.
