On a serious note, just in case you really are a newbie to the Interwebs: start by joining a discussion group (like this one) which matches up with the things you like (as you're a technical lead, CP is a reasonable bet, but there's something for everyone), and start talking to people.

Just remember to talk to people as if they were standing in front of you, and ignore people who don't return that courtesy.

And don't wait for permission to talk: we're all just faceless voices, so everyone is completely equal, with the same right to take part.

I don't see the bonus upside at all. Groupthink is seldom beneficial, and in this case part of what it translates into is creating trillions of currency units that will be given or lent out in a way that, as usual, skews towards favored interests.
