Sorry to hear about that, I also experienced this with some of my articles and I think something should be done about this. Maybe its a small consolation to you that I upvoted your article with 5 points.

Yeah, I noticed a while back when an article of mine literally got attacked with downvotes that:
CP LoopHole!
It is far better to write an article and post it in the forum because no one can downvote in here without you knowing who it is.

Really? How does one see that?

Downvote
<=== (down arrow over on left)
doesn't do anything, right?
And if you do a thumbs down (the icon/emojis) then you can see who made that vote.
Oh, for those, you just float over them and it shows who voted using emoji.
Here', I'll downvote your message with a thumbs down.
So...
|
|
|
|
|
Looking at one of my down voted messages.
- Hovering over down vote button does nothing.
- Clicking on it just returns a message that I cannot vote on my own thread.
- Clicking on emoji button gives same/similar message.
- Hovering over vote total at bottom does nothing - it is not clickable.
Looking at your emoji
- Hovering over it does give a name.
Oddly enough I also see the following for myself.
- In the Lounge down vote is disabled.
- In Free Tools there is no down/up vote button at all. But it does have the 'Rate' (1 to 5) at bottom of screen.

Yes, that's why I'm suggesting everyone post all their articles to the Lounge.
No one can downvote in the lounge.
No one will ever downvote you...and if they use the thumbsdown icon you can see who did it.

I'm looking into this. So far, it doesn't seem to a case of serial downvoting, but if you start to see more votes of 1, please let me know.
Nevertheless, I will investigate further.

I was about to mention you, since you've been so helpful to me in the past. I was looking, and one of my articles was downvoted as well - I'm fine with it, and it doesn't look like they've done it to everything like they typically do so I didn't say anything. I wasn't paying attention to other folks articles in that respect though.

Nah, you're arab and people don't like you
Seriously this - "but some people just want to be jerks"
I've seen this on other articles where unknown yahoos vote 1, claim derivative work, you could have just used <insert random="" s="" w="" from="" github="" or="" elsewhere="">, disparage, and otherwise piss on your parade. Traditionally, this would get them into a fist fight where they might reconsider their ways, but it's the internet.
Just to spite the prick, I'm going to go look at your articles - keep paddling.

Some want you to cater to the lowest denominator. If they don't understand your article, they assume it's your problem.

To be fair, if people don't understand my articles, I do consider it my problem, but I'd prefer an explanation of the downvote.

Yep, they're out there.
I just gave you a +5, purely for the effort you put into the project and the article, and to counter the +1.

Yea seriously. They exist all over. I posted a few answers on stackoverflow a while back -- one jamoke copied my answer and reformatted it, and then had the balls to downvote my answer. The jackweed had a gozzillian StackOverFlow points too. I had to argue with the site to get me back into the black, just so i could use the site.

may i inquire how C++ integer arithmetic is performed in your code so as to prevent / detect / report overflow ?

The usual way is after adding two positive numbers together, check if the result is negative. If it is, you've overflowed. You can also, if you're adding two 32-bit numbers together, cast them both to 64-bit, then add them and check if the resulting 64-bit value is greater than INT32_MAX.

Many moons ago, I was called in as consultant for a small business using Cobol
and random access files for recording inventory transactions.
Their main database file had been corrupted with new transactions
overwriting existing transactions.
I suspected integer oveflow.
The field in the header record for the file was used to store the
next free location. It was 16 bits so once they reached 65536
transactions the next free location was previously used.
The Cobol number field was always positive so the roll over just went backwards.
They were very surprised that 65536 transactions had occured.
The coding fix was easy. I had to calculate the corrupted locations and
restore the data from backups. Because I was still in Grad school,
and the owner provided me extra pay for less hours
so I could finish.
True story.
