I did a sadly shorter one, 7 months during COVID. The best time of my life. Cozying with the cat, reading 12 hours / day and playing all the time consuming open world RPGs I love while being paid.
Pure bliss.

I am jealous.
We had the "Kurzarbeitergeld" (German money for people working in things stopped by corona) for some months at work. A big % of the people who were sent home were complaining A LOT they wanted to work. I offered me voluntarily to accept one of those, they wouldn't allow me and had to work through (only normal holidays for the whole corona time)

I have embellished a bit, I was on a project and the first month was work as usual, I was simply so amazing that after that time I only had to make minor modifications or checks every once in a while. I was "on call" during the day and I usually performed my tasks quickly - as I already knew the codebase inside and outside.
But yea, from April to November I had basically a couple of horus of work each week or less, with full pay. Then I moved on a project where I worked roughly 16 hours/week, been to fast and finished 3 months early. That's when I got punished for my hubris...

The group leader blamed me a couple of times because I finished my ToDo's for the night earlier and helped a couple of colleagues to finish them.
His arguments were: If you get a ToDo and you finish it everyday, it will take less than a week for the bosses to make the list bigger, until the moment comes when you can't finish it, and then they will complain because you can't do it.
From that night on, I always did my list but left the one or two less critical point(s) undone.
And that's why I like working in things alone, nobody complain about my speed but I have to pull the break from time to time before syncing parts, so that the others are not left behind.

This is a company that's pretty rigid. Yes, I've taken the time to be up to date on sitecore. Yes it's depressing

I contract. I've got clients, but all my work is either waiting on other people, hardware, or money right now, so I hear you. Hang in there.

It's been four months in a six month contract!!;

Next Tuesday will mark a year that I’ve been in my six-month contract. For the first few months or so I didn’t have a whole lot to do. It took the client the better part of a month to send me a laptop so during that time I was able to download and learn how to use a component that I would be using for the project I was hired to do. Near my six months on the job I was made part of another team at the same client. Now I’m staying pretty busy but every once in a while I have some dead time.

Christian,
Based on your comments on the thread, I'd be looking for a way to protect the $1k a day. Come up with a short (or long) list of proposed improvements, feature adds, etc. Being paid, I don't see the loss in spending time developing a plan for the client. I'd also have concerns about that amount not flying under the company radar and losing a nice check.
Let your creativity flow and wow the heck out of them. It's worth a shot if that is what you want to keep doing. That's good money for an 'open' type of contract. If you create the need, and can get a renewal, you'd still have a good deal that wouldn't be forcing you to crunch keys for 8 hours a day.

It's a superannuation company. What I have access to is tightly controlled. There's just not much scope for that. Hell, I still don't have azure access. There's other roles paying that, I've had them before.

Hey, first I admit I had to look up Quote: superannuation I thought I was missing some tech thing.
That's a tough situation from the work point of view, though the money isn't bad in AUD.
In that case, I guess I'd just take the money and enjoy your spring on the beach while researching your next venture.

The contract has two months left, at a minimum I assume I won't stay on. I've already interviewed with someone who expects to hire in Jan

They are much appreciated.
I'll reply to you individually at some point, but I'm both floating on a seea of coffee and not in a good place mentally ATM - nothing to worry about, I'm just having a lot of difficulty focussing and making a lot of "bad news calls" which are all difficult in different ways - but for the moment please accept a "group thank you".
Everyone local is rallying around and being supportive (which is hard to process in it's own way) but I have some difficult decisions to make in the next few days so I may or may not be here much.
Thank you all again.
