well as in, I learned something new and it made me think a bit. I have too much on my plate as it is - wife's chariot is dead this morning - but I wonder what the performance would be of ssds in a raid. I'll let the OP let us know

I will second the recommendation for TrueNAS. I purpose built a NAS using a nice small Lian Li chassis with a four drive bay, then added a mini motherboard with an NVME slot and a Core-i5 CPU. Toss in some memory, install TrueNAS to boot from the NVME, and it runs perfectly. I originally had four 3TB drives in it, then upgraded to 8TB units as the prices came down and I needed more space.
The beauty of TrueNAS is that you can replace drives and it automatically rebuilds the array. If you use larger drives, once you've replaced them all it automatically scales the array to use the full amount of newly available space.
Management is via a web interface, creating Windows-accessible shares is a breeze, and TrueNAS is free software and vary capable.
Cheers
Norm

On Ebay, these at 500 Gb are going for $35, and at 1 Tb they are going for $70.

It was due on Thursday, but it's coming from the US, which means both the USPS and Royal Mail are involved, so I was expecting it in a couple of weeks time.
But no, it arrived days early.
A week (or more probably - I don't check often enough and haven't set up the email alerts yet) one of my RAID 5 NAS disks failed, and because they are all the same age, I ordered a full set of replacements on the 30th Sept.
And today they arrived: four 4TB HGST Ultrastar HDDs, in original sealed packaging, all SMART details reading 0 hours**
And ... they have a five year replacement warrantee!
16TB of storage*, guaranteed for 5 years, all for £179.04 (US$219.10) including P&P? I'd call that a bargain - the ones they are replacing cost way more than that.
Faulty disk hot swapped, RAID rebuild in progress. Tomorrow, I'll replace a second, rebuild, and so on. Not sure what I'll do with the older ones when I'm fully swapped.
* 12TB when configured RAID 5
** The old disks are showing 3088 days, 19 hours and three of them are fine.

It's a thought. I could even slam 'em into the old Seagate NAS and flog it as a complete system.

They are described as "refurbished" but what arrived is brand new stock with original seals and warranty cards.

Very reasonable!
I've currently got a failed drive on my 6 drive ZFS RAID-6 array using Seagate ST4000VN008's which have the same sector count so I'm hoping these will be an acceptable replacement.
I've order 2!
FYI, I'm also into UK so have the same delay.

TBH, most HDDs have like a 5 year mean time between failure, IIRC so I'm not sure that warranty is all that and a bag of chips.
My poor FIL is dealing with his Drobo unit, and they no longer exist. It won't recognize his 6TB HDD and we don't know why yet.
