I know for sure that the farthest distance that I've ever been from any other human being is
3 miles. I can't be entirely sure, but it could be as many as 20-30 miles.
What about you?

Try Australia, we have some of the most remote roads in the world... I have driven on the Barrier Highway[^] to Adelaide. There is not a lot to see... Photos[^]

I remember driving from Waga Waga to Adelaide and the road was empty and straight as an arrow for mile after mile. I was ruminating what would happen if the car broke down, when I saw a Rolls Phantom in the back mirror and, soon after, it disappeared in front of me. Than I realized: I would travel in style

Well I'm about 8,000 miles away from some guy in China right now.
And in 1969 I was about 250K Miles away from the crew of Apollo 11.
The difficult we do right away...
...the impossible takes slightly longer.

If you go alone on several day mountain trips, it can be hard to tell. You don't know if there are people in the cabins you see in the distance. Down in the valley behind the mountain a car may be passing by on the road. I wouldn't know, and it would be insignificant.
I guess that the loneliest place where I have been all alone was in between the two huge sheets of ice making up the Svartisen glacier in the north of Norway, directly under the polar circle. In direct line-of-sight, the nearest road was about 15 km away - but that would be across the glacier. For all practical purposes, the nearest point were I could be sure to find another human was about 20 km away, if you don't mind crossing a glacier. If you prefer to walk on dry land, you would have at least a 25 km walk.
There might have been other mountain walkers in the same area, but I didn't see anyone, didn't talk to any other human for a full week. I still have a longing back to that area, but it seems like I am now unable to build up the physical strength to repeat that mountain walk.

Outside of your job, what are your side projects?
|
|
|
|
|
a.) Writing tools for visual handicapped people. E.g. Sound editing programs with 'auditive UI'
b.) Attempting to understand and program numerical solutions of differential equations without the help of libraries
But at the end it is related to my job

Meeting Mrs.' every whim with a smile.
Keeping my greyhound happy with treats without letting him get fat.
Calibrating the amount I pet my fat cat ("don't pick me up! rub my belly!") and my skinny cat ("too much is never enough").

Recreating the Battlefield of Gettysburg. With blocks.
"Before entering on an understanding, I have meditated for a long time, and have foreseen what might happen. It is not genius which reveals to me suddenly, secretly, what I have to say or to do in a circumstance unexpected by other people; it is reflection, it is meditation." - Napoleon I

My dad's side of the family is from Gettysburg. Definitely not the same town it was when I was a kid. Much more crowded with general commerce that you see in any town and less touristy.

Computer graphics stuff and robot simulators. I have figured out forward kinematics and I'm trying to figure out inverse kinematics now. There are pictures in my profile. My 'avatar' is one example of the CGI stuff.
