I'd love to donate our dog, but my wife and daughters won't let me.

That's my sign and exact situation.
I have a large rough coat collie (think Lassie) who is up in age and the hips are going. I have a golden getting up in age and the hips are going. I cannot wait to see those vet bills.
Oh I have a rat terrier mix breed mistake in evolution that will probably outlast me. But if she goes, I'll put her in a plastic trash bag and into the trash.

No one will see me, and there will be no kids (youngest is 24) around to have a funeral. Thanks for the laugh.

Interesting coincident. I just visited Petco for the first time in several years. Wanted to look at aquariums. Not sure I want to commit, but toying with idea. As a rule, I avoid having pets (the mammal type) because of their dependency and my commitment. I do have wild pets in my backyard, that I help support with bird seed and bread crumbs. I have a Bluejay, Mockingbird sharing a huge bushy cedar tree and a bunch of smaller wrens. I have a number of anole lizard families sharing patio, porch, back fence. They eat live insects, including mosquitoes.
Dogs are a different kind of pet. They have a tendency to want family life. Love them, but wife is allergic so no pet dogs or cats.

One needs to learn how to say NO and mean it (really 11 kids). For years while in Singapore we were pet free, it was a great joy to return to Oz and get a couple of labs, despite the vet bills they have already run up at less than 5 yo.

My friend tried to donate her cat, Mr. President to us. We couldn't take him, because our present cats would not allow it.
Having existing cats precludes us from accepting any donations - at least the sort that breathe

Doesn't that mean you get a chance to try it out first and return it if you don't like it?

Our current dog, a shepsky (German Shepperd Husky mix) came to our house because my youngest son had some female friends, one of whom was sharing an apartment with another girl and a guy. The guy goes to the animal shelter and picks Cody. About a week later, he decides he's going to college after all, and just up and leaves the dog with the two girls. They are both students as well and can't look after him. The girl talks to my son's wife who contacts us to see if we would take the dog. My wife cannot say no.
So, now I get to walk a spastic, high energy dog 3 miles a day.
I guess on the plus side I am down from 230 to 198 pounds.
I’ve given up trying to be calm. However, I am open to feeling slightly less agitated.
I’m begging you for the benefit of everyone, don’t be STUPID.

I've taken care of many pets over the years, but I'm adamant about the next one being mine. It's something I've always wanted.

Only one of all the donated cats left here at the moment, he's quite well behaved (most of the time)

Who pays the vet bills? That's who owns the animal!
Except for cats - they own the whole house and everyone inside ...

Only if they pay the mortgage, food and medical bills!
(And no, I don't have a cat!)

The variation of that I came across was "the only good cat is one embedded in my car's tire tread".

Kind of the opposite. Our current dog is a rehome that someone on a lurcher group asked if anyone could give it a home as, due to neighbours and landlord, it was going to get them evicted (and she was caring for two sick dogs so that wasn't really an option) so I suppose that's sort of like a donated dog, but our previous dog was a rescue from an animal rescue centre. We actively sought that one out after some searching and visits, rather than someone "dumping" it on us.

I realize a positive sentiment regarding one's dog doesn't fit the tenor of this thread, but IDGAF. I love my dog.

Lovely dogs. We've often thought we'd like a greyhound ourselves.
Our current dog is a 3 way split - Border collie + Whippet from Dad, Husky from mum. She's quite a handful.
The previous one was somewhat of unknown provenance. She was abandoned in a cardboard box at the gates of the rescue in December with the rest of her litter, the box of course got wet, they all got out and were discovered over a period of days. Ours was the last to be found, running around hungry in a field with the horses. All 6 were nursed back to health - one of them had rickets which was corrected - and as best can be told they were predominantly deerhound crossed with Bedlington terrier with some other random breeds along the way. She was one of two rough coated, along with "Ricky" - the others were relatively smooth. She was a lovely dog, a bit timid but very faithful to my partner, barely leaving her side over 12 years.

If you do get a greyhound, be aware you need to have sofa-to-dog ratio greater than one .
They are the world's fastest couch potatoes.

Yeah, figures. They do like a stretch lie down, from what I hear.
Our own dog has her own sofa, and multiple beds where she can keep a watchful eye on goings on, but she still takes a chair that's just been vacated when she can, often coming up to whoever is currently sitting in it, and using her "husky-talk" wow-waw-wah-wah-waw, meaning shift your a$$, I want that.

Spent few minutes consuming my daily java and observing workers to
add yellow frame around traffic lights
The immediate effect was to create traffic jam and indirectly causing
"fender bender" - thus further reducing 4 lanes of traffic to one....
My burning question - will adding yellow frame around traffic light HELP TO
reduce / eliminate / affect speeding drivers with
mentality " I do not care, I am going thru ..."
from going thru RED light ?
|
|
|
|
|
Surprisingly, that is exactly what they are intended to do:
The yellow frames around the perimeter of traffic lights are called reflective backplates. They are designed to help motorists see the signals more easily during morning and evening hours, in areas of visual clutter where the lights might otherwise be obscured, and in areas where lights are oddly spaced.

It helps to prosecute them. It makes it harder to say you never saw the lights.
