Many years ago, I used a program with the name MAQANA.
Apparently, it was supposed to be called MAΓANA but Γ is ascii character 209 and many terminals were set to 7-bit mode so stripped the 128 bit and displayed ascii code 81 which is Q.

i tend to avoid using special chars like tilde and umlaut for most inputs because of inconsistent interpretations
just hope context will clarify.

jmaida wrote: i tend to avoid using special chars Let's call it by its right name: Un-American characters. In other languages than (US) English, they are perfectly normal, standard. Nothing 'special'.
The only 'special' is that Americans (including ASCII, American Standard Code for Information Interchange) is incapable of handling them. This includes a lot of hardware, software and meatware. I am happy to see that the fraction is diminishing. The trends are suggesting that within 50 to 100 years, there will general accept for the normality of alphabetic characters outside the A-Za-z range.
