Counting pre-release announcements, MS .net was officially Windows only for the first 15ish years of it's life. It's only been officially cross platform for 5; and early versions of .net core fell well short of being full featured replacements for the legacy stack.

Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?
--Zachris Topelius
