Most tech workers wouldn't be happy with Facebook's localized salaries, which are set to take effect next year. It's not who you know, it's where you live (and work)?

I suppose in the US is the same or even worse, but I am only to speak about Germany.
Working for Company A in Munich for let's say 5000€ a month... and working for the same company remotely from let's say Gunzenhausen with 4000€ a month... I think I would get the second option.
Some cities are just damned expensive and 50% or 60% of the salary is gone in fixed costs.
Living anywhere else might get that % reduced drastically. So depending on how big the cut is and where you live, you might finish the month with more money in your account.

Brilliant. So companies can save money by reducing office space, remote workers tend to work longer hours (this is based on a survey of one, namely me, but anecdotally from my coworkers as well) and sick employees that can work remotely often work at home while under the weather...
...and we get a pay cut.

I worked for a company that had localized salaries, although they never really made up for the cost of living in truly expensive locations.
But if people can choose to work remotely, where they live is up to them, so salaries shouldn't be adjusted for location. This is one of the most asinine pay-related things I've seen. Then again, FB are probably so constipated that their employees won't be working remotely.

Probably just like on Windows: not much will outright break, but everything will grind to a slow crawl as Defender decides it needs 87% of your compute resources for several minutes at a time

Funny. One major reason why I hav thrown out everything else, is that I never saw that kind of behaviour with Defender. I did with several others, though. Including the one we use at work. And the one we used before that, at work.
We had one that made noone work late hours on Thursdays: Every Thursday at 5pm, a total virus scan on all disks were started, which caused every single operation that had a timeout to time out. I never knew why they didn't rather run it at 10pm or 2am. Maybe everybody was happy to have a good excuse for not working late on Thursdays.

To be fair, I use Defender on my various home computers and it doesn't cause me any problems there. It's only my work laptop(s) that have seen Defender wage prolonged battles for CPU dominance. I use a lot of the same software on my home computers as I do on my work laptop (since I develop software for fun as well as for profit!), so it must be something in the way my company sets Defender's configuration that makes it act like that.

Maybe I'm just hard to please, but I found these quite disappointing. I would've thought they'd show the sun setting on the horizon (OK, a small problem for Uranus), as well the sun's relative size.

It's a good idea, but the article shows a group of politicians making the announcement. It's difficult to think of a group that is singularly less qualified to opine on finances.
