And thus begins one of Code Projects saddest annual traditions. Linking to articles that cherry pick 4 or 5 random datapoints out of the results of StackOverflow's yearly survey because they can't deny it's newsworthiness; but don't want to directly link to it.

This one gets my continued ire because managements attempt to have its cake and eat it too with the SO Dev Survey.
If they decide it was newsworthy enough to link to the survey results directly despite SO being a competing platform to QA and the programming forums; I'd be impressed that they finally decided to take the high ground and do what's best for Insider readers. (And at this point it's not like more than a handful have been living under a big enough rockpile not to know that SO exists.)
Alternately, if they chose to adopt an official policy of pretending SO doesn't exist and completely ignored the SO Dev survey, and all the craptastic clickbait churned out by other sites writing about it I wouldn't say a word. (Roll my eyes in private, certainly, but not say anything.)
Instead what they're doing just makes them look sad and a little bit silly; and I will continue to express my dismay when they repeat the current process every year.

Also, they have a beta eeprom upgrade that makes the Pi4 bootable from USB. I tried it on my Pi4x4, and it works great!

I was looking at displays a couple of days ago on Amazon. There are a number of touch displays available (5-15 inch), but I don't have any experience with them.

The Pi4 uses HDMI for video. As long as the monitor uses HDMI as well, you should be good to go.

Impressive. I've never looked at this before. It seems like much more than a toy.
A question. Various Linux variants are available for it. Visual Studio supports Linux development, though that's the extent of my knowledge. So is it unreasonable to expect that I could develop code targeted for Linux using Visual Studio and then test it on a Raspberry Pi running a Linux-based O/S? I'm loath to play around with installing Linux on my Windows Laptop and would rather take the route just outlined.

As long as your app is compiled with.Net Core 3.1 or newer, and doesn't have a UI, then yes.

I don't use this .NET stuff but write pure C++. However, I need to write an adaptation layer for Linux instead of Windows.
Debugging might be a problem. It's good in Visual Studio, at least for Windows, but I have no idea how well it work would on a Raspberry Pi with Linux.

Nope. It can sometimes be a bit tricky, if the setup is very difficult, but standard things are actually pretty easy

Look for the free version for private use of VMWare-Player (I use the v12.5.9 to "virtualize" Windows XP and 7) or VirtualBox (used to restore a backup of a Linux Server, I haven't used to setup a linux desktop yet).
I have been procrastinating the Linux-Tests to setup something for the family. This could be a nice chance to get started and at the same time help you out.

Rich Turner, a senior program manager at Microsoft, has taken to Twitter to practically beg people to move away from Cmd to PowerShell. Because it works? (And you can choose which product is "it" in that sentence.)
I think it works either way.
I get where he's coming from, as PowerShell is much more capable, but my fingers still type 'dir /r /s /p', not 'get-childitem -recurse | more'.
Yes, Mr. PowerShell Master, I could use 'gci' there. Not really much better for my fingers, IMO.

A lot of people[1] suggest that Microsoft would never do something as stupid as removing CMD because, as Rich Tuner says, it's needed for legacy scripts and other stuff that are never, ever going to go away.
However... recently my impression is that Microsoft is losing its way a little but in terms of backward compatibility and its importance in the corporate marketplace. My impression is that there are people in charge there now who live and think in the legacy-free (supposedly) web mindspace and who don' know and can't understand that there's a whole corporate world out there that is vastly slower moving, where decades long compatibility matters way more than the latest cool thing. Their treatment of VB, where they can't even stick to their own strategy, is one symptom of this.
It would not surprise me (but it would sadden me) if CMD turns out to another symptom of this sooner rather than later.
