No, "is" still works for "maths". It used to be seen as plural, but that usage is now obsolete *.
But "gets me" is definitely not an acceptable alternative.

The idea that the "s" on the end of "maths" makes it plural is obsolete.
The "s" on the end of "maths" is not obsolete. We haven't conceded that one to the septics yet!

I think you've misunderstood my point. I'm not saying that maths is obsolete; I'm saying that the idea that "maths" or "mathematics" is plural is obsolete.
So "maths is hard" is correct, and "maths are hard" is obsolete.

In the UK we would simply say "Maths is hard" (Mathematics is hard), similarly to "Mechanics is hard" or "Physics is hard".

This is entirely funny, they can't even control the changes they want to implement in the system. 
I have a good, close and personal experience of software architects whining about how they are treated — treated, as in the negative way. Because, we are all aware, it is not the software architect who decides the software, but the boss.

A good architecture requires planning (and a skilled developer, not a junior developer.)
Unfortunately, planning, and particularly doing a better job on integrating data and functionality flies in the face of the boss' requirement for "agility" and "velocity", which is syntactical sugar for "fast and cheap."
Funny though - integrating and modularity are rather orthogonal, which is indicative of just how confused people are about software development.

I have worked with a number of home automation/security companies in the past. My approach has always been fully operative onsite systems enhanced with network services. These companies have all insisted on cloud service dependency as a result, I no longer work with them. Here is a great example why consumers should not buy into cloud services, you are at the mercy of the cloud owner/operator, even making purchased equipment worthless at their doing.
I only do cloud services if I have complete control of the cloud and would recomend others do the same.
