Older developers, particularly those in the 38-53 and the 54-72 age brackets, overwhelmingly tended to create games as their first programming project. Those currently aged 21 and under, however, tended to build calculators as their first programming projects. Where's the fun in that?

They're only making calculators in the hope that they'll become sentient, and say "Hello World".

I thought it was because everyone likes

When I saw some other news article mention the same thing, I thought maybe there is a missed understanding of first program.
Calculator might be the first "traditional" program they learned, but not realising that Minecraft and many other games have obscured programming mechanisms.
Compare that with atari/commador (before my time so I might have a skewed perception here) that had pre packaged software, but also books which require you to write in the game before you can play it, hence becomes your first program you wrote, although maybe 95% copied with your tweaks.

For the past two days, Windows 10 users from around the world have been reporting that they are unable to connect to Windows Update. When they attempt to do so, Windows 10 will complain that they are unable to connect to the update service. "And there was much rejoicing."

They should do the same with degree courses, per university.

And there's this:

A survey conducted by HackerRank, a popular competitive programming platform, found JavaScript to be the most popular programming language for 2018. Frequently used != 'popular' (for either of them)

But we already know that, in order of magnitude, there are:- Lies

So what are we supposed to take away from this article?

It's probably the "most used", but "popular" has a comeplete different meaning.
If MS would just come out with it's own strongly typed scripting langauge, javascript would fade and die.

A lot of snark, but I've attended some coding meetup groups and almost everyone there is doing some sort of front end web developments for which they use JavaScript. I've been impressed with how quickly some of the demonstrators have put together working solutions.

But are these people truly JavaScript programmers, or are they just users of one of the gazillion frameworks?
