Exactly.

I can imagine it could get ugly and I was just messing around to see if it would work (guess I should have used a joke icon somewhere). I don't see a problem with it not working that way.

It didn't log me on automatically but I hadn't set up an account there.

I then set up an account but I could not use the same account info as CP as it said:

I set up an account with a different email and that doesn't log me in automatically either - although I wonder how it could with a different email id?

Could you delete my not very old "forogar" account on rootadmin so that your "create using the info from CP" feature can do it - or better yet, recognize the similarities enough to be able to merge them.

When I di go to create an account it was prepopulated nicely with the CP data. Didn't bother creating an account, I have almost no interest in the subject matter!

People will not test your application, that you have to do yourself.

here you can get some information or idea for testing your apps. Smile | :)

Actually, TS2 and my other freeware apps are used by thousands of users worldwide and have been reviewed by several popular freeware sites including CNet and SoftPedia. They're also used by several CPians.

German based MFC help on memory leak.

Hello everybody,

in our business we have developed a realtime instrument control application. It was written in MSVC Prof. with C++ as a multithreaded modular MFC Doc/View application. The main program with the intrument interface was changed recently to reflect some changes in the intrument controller which was changed from running as DLL to being a service utilizing memory mapped files.

Unfortunatly since this change our application is slowly eating up memory. After some weeks the application will hang or crash. We've already invested much time isolating the error with CRT diagnostic and other techniques but were not able to locate the source of the problem.

We are looking for german based help on this issue. Anyone feels tempted or knows where to ask for help?

the code has of course some comments. They are mixed german and english. I'd say that all the key points have comments (but as always Smile | :)

) there could be more.

Approximately what's the size of the project? What version of the Visual Studio IDE was it built in?

I can probably refer you to contractors in America that would be willing to help (at a price of course) but pretty sure no one will do it for free (or maybe at all given the german comments).

There are distinct reasons I ask for Germany based help. It's not just the comments but also I assume that there will be the need of some in-lab testing with a real instrument connection. The memory leak is not depending on that and also there in the demo mode.

IDE has evolved. The project started with MSVC 6 but the changes introducing the leak came somewhat around the change from MSVC 2005 to MSVC 2010. Don't have the actual project size but will post when I'm back in Office.

We know that we will need and have a budget for the advice.

If the leak occurs in the demo mode, there's no need to be there... but if it only occurs with the actual instrumentation, then yes, you're right, would probably need to be there.

Can the following idea succeed ? Would you collaborate ?

Companies rely on enterprise messaging applications like Skype and Communicator.
However, I worked on two big companies and realized a need that not quite accomplished by such software...

In fact, one often need to ask for something, as not evrything is documented. You know for sure that someone has the answer, but to find it it requires you to know them all and be able to talk to them directly...
This is not so true, as evry worker has a limited circle of collegues whom he can address easily.

Even with those close collegues, it is not appropriate to send a group chat and disturb them with that. Especially, when this becomes frequent.

With this in mind, I had the following idea, please share your point of view :

Imagine a small app, that you somehow share to all collegues and convince them to install ; Then you configure a list of "Topics" and each one can decide to subscribe to a topic. If someone posts a question/discussion about a topic that gets broadcasted to all list of subscribers who see a Tray notification. they can click the icon and reply in real time.

This would be useful, wouldn't it ?

Just something additional to think about, not directly a verdict; the experience below is based on a single company, and others will react in a different way.

We tried something similar at a previous employer; we used email - it's quite easy to select the intended recipients, and the infrastructure was already there. Popups were provided by Outlook and/or the Messenger service. Sounded like a great idea, but it ended a disaster.

What happened is that some of the devs answered "immediately", or that the manager came in when answering "took to long". The popup was distracting, and responsibility for features or problems was moved using the system. Within two days, I routed the mails to a label, only looking at them during a lunchbreak or whenever I refilled the coffee. Killed the mobile phone, closed the door, gained back my productivity. The tray-icon nowadays does not even show the virus-scanner; I've had it with software that yanks me out of flow by stealing the focus.

I've often longed for software where we could "share" knowledge internally, and where people can participate in discussions. From my previous experience, I'd rather go for an internally hosted blog, and have people participate voluntarily, when it suits them.

To be fair; it was not the technology that made it a disaster, only the way we used it. It could have worked, if the mails would be treated the way we treated the mails from the bugreporting-system.

I could see how using Outlook would be distracting... some people see the pop-ups and have this urge to address it immediately. I keep my Outlook closed most of the time for that very reason, to avoid the distraction.

The forum idea is good, although I've seen other people already doing something like that. I believe someone posted screen captures of theirs here on CP.
