I am using SOAP Toolkit 2.0 SP2 on Windows NT 4.0. I built a VB 6.0 dll which has a simple com class 'TestObject' with a method of the following signature:
Public Function Test(ByVal strInput As String) As Long
I also created a web service for this dll. The problem is, if I call the method by creating the object directly (using VB script), it works fine. But if I call it through the SOAP interface (also using VB script), then it blows up with the following information:
Error: Invalid procedure call or argument: 'Test'
Code: 800A0005
Source: Microsoft VB script runtime error
I have added trace to my dll which shows that the method in the dll was executed with no problem. The problem only happens at the stage where the return value is assigned to a variable in the VB script. There is no error if I don't assign the return value to a variable.
By the way, there is no problem with the VB scripts I am using (they work fine on different machines).
Any idea what is wrong?

Dear
I have a question about how to use attribute or element. Recently when I desige the XML data map, I am confusing that when should I attribute , when
should I use element. For example, I have "Login" root element. Inside the Login, I want to put username and password. So, Should I make an child
element "username" and "password"? Or should I put attribute "username" and "password" under the root element "Login"??
Well, it seems not much different between two. But in many case, I always think about Should I use this field for attribute or for child element? Is
there any general rules can help me to choose between attribute and element?
such as if the data size is large, we should use........etc
How does it affect the application performance?

I have made a Jave Applet that can draw vector graph. I use it in HTML page

this task. But the later's size is larger than Java Applet. Here has .NET,
extra choice. I want know if I write the control by C#(It is a .NET control),
what advantage I can get and what I lost?
Thank you.

I have a IIS/ASP/SQL/COM web project which I inherited at work that uses a lot of "questionable" coding practices. I want to find better tools, programming practices, debugging methods, project management, etc. when dealing with IIS/ASP/SQL/COM. So I figured I'd see what .NET has to offer. However, I don't know where to start.
Can anyone point me in the direction of some good tutorials on getting started from the ground up with IIS/ASP/SQL/COM the .NET way?
thx

Hi everyone,
I've got the following situation:
Multiple modules (Web Controls in fact) reside on the same web page. Each has some input fields that need to be checked before submitting. I tried to use those nice input validator controls of ASP.net as they can handle it.
However:
As I only can have one form-tag (that runs server-side) on a page, and nested forms dont work either, it occurs that I cannot sumit (or call a module's member function) without having filled out the fields of *both* modules. This isn't the expected behaviour, as the the user should be able to use one module independently of the other.
How can I trick the validators into that?

Well I finally managed to get VS .NET Beta 2 installed (not everyone has a gig free of space! ) and I eagerly loaded everything up only to discover the following error.
It appears when ever I attempt to view the Design tab in a project (i.e. Form1.vb [Design])
The error is:
An error occured while loading the document. Fix the error, and then try loading the document again. The error message follows:
File or assembly name EnvDTE, or one of its dependencies, was not found.
I searched MSDN and online for this error but could find very little reference to it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Just for everyones info if you ever get that error I got above, do a fresh re-install. After I nuked my PC and then re-installed VS.Net Beta 2 things worked great. Just ensure you have plenty of free space, especially on your C: drive.

I am just starting to learn .net and ordered c# the the .net platfrom by Andrew Troelsen. This looks like a good book to learn about .net and c# sharp. I have read the 1st chapter which is an intro and part of the 2nd about c#. The book is based on beta 2 and is 970 pages. Check out
http://www.apress.com/catalog/toc/1893115593/ for more info. But here is the table of contents:
Chapter 1: The Philosophy of .NET
Chapter 2: C# language Fundamentals
Chapter 3: Object Oriented Programming
Chapter 4: Interfaces and Collections
Chapter 5: Advanced C# Class Construction Techniques
Chapter 6: Assemblies, Threads and AppDomains
Chapter 7: Reflection and Attributes
Chapter 8: Building a Better Window (intro to Windows Forms)
Chapter 9: A Better Painting Framework (GDI+)
Chapter 10: Programming with Windows Forms Controls
Chapter 11: Input, Output and Object Serialization

I know I shouldn't have done this, but I did, and I wonder if it is a bug that anyone has heard about:
I created a new Web App. In the design view, I dragged an SqlAdapter and connection onto my aspx page, rather than creating a middle-tier component. VS added the appropriate member variables and added code to InitializeComponent() to set up the Sql objects. I got my app working fine.
After a while, my virtual memory usage creeps up and I'm swapping like a mad dog, so I save my app, exit VS, and restart the system. When I come back, the Sql objects no longer appear in design view, and the initialization code is gone from InitializeComponent(). However, the member variables are still there!
I fixed everthing, and got the app working. I save, exit and restart a number of times and everything is OK. Then, a day or so later, same problem!
Has anyone seen this?
Plus, when the Sql objects disappeared, another strange thing happened. Even thought I had code in my aspx.cs module for event handlers for my DataGrid, the event handlers weren't called. When I looked at the VS property sheet, my handlers weren't listed. Simply adding them into the property sheet fixed the problem, and they were called. Why is that? Shouldn't simply having them in the aspx.cs module make them work?
Thanks for any clues.

Quick answer here but I believe that they are the same thing. Windows relies on COM (now COM+) and as one sage remarked "Microsofts ace is COM, everything else they do is just fluff for their COM empire".
Naturally the word Components gets bandied about a lot. From my experience when they refer to Components in the VS.NET help and articles they simply are talking about the custom controls and components that come with VS.NET. You can naturally create your own Components for VS.NET and in most cases they will be COM+.

Is it possible to install VS .Net Beta 2 and VS6 on the same system.
|
|
|
|
|
Theoretically that shouldn't be a problem. Although there is no garanty that installing VS.NET Beta 2 will not affect your other apps so dramatically that not only VS6 but also your OS stops working properly.
At the moment VS.NET Beta 2 is in a very unstable stage.

I ran VS6 and VS.Net Beta 1 on my laptop with WIN2000 Prof for about three months without problems. I recently uninstalled the Beta 1, and installed Beta 2 Framework SDK, and have not noticed any problems with the rest of my applications.
You may need to be careful when you run the compilers to be sure you are pointing to the correct path, and that the correct CL is being invoked.

Yes but don't compile any production code with VB6 as some of the components will be pulled from .Net and installed on the client machine.
