Conversion from VC6 to VC8

While converting some of my old dll which is currently compiled in VC6 and is also running successfully.

VC2005 compile is throwing compiler error for this piece of code :-

string MyReturn()
{
return string(reinterpret_cast<const char *>(vec.begin()), vec.size());
}

here return type string is STL::string and vec is stl::vector of type unsigned char and i am receiving following error :-

error C2440: 'reinterpret_cast' : cannot convert from 'std::_Vector_const_iterator<_Ty,_Alloc>' 
to 'const char *'
        with
        [
            _Ty=unsigned char,
            _Alloc=std::allocator<unsigned char>
        ]
Conversion requires a constructor or user-defined-conversion operator, 
which can't be used by const_cast or reinterpret_cast

Does anyone know or can give direction to solve above problem, i have tried many way myself, was successfull in using _myfirst member of vector to resolve the problem, but it started giving some other problem.

Use another string constructor.

return string(vec.begin(), vec.end());

Nope not working :-

error C2665: 'std::basic_string<_Elem,_Traits,_Ax>::basic_string' : none of the 13 overloads could convert all the argument types

I tried this first before replying to you and it is working fine.
I used Visual Studio 2008

Here is what I tried -

vector<unsigned char> vec;
vec.push_back('A');
vec.push_back('B');
vec.push_back('C');

string s(vec.begin(), vec.end());

It seems the vector holds unsigned chars while the string holds char.

Try:

string((const char*)&vect[0], vect.size());

Hi,
I want to show the rows on dialog box, based on data coming from database.However I can't use list control. Could you please let me know how to display in this scenario.

Why not ? does that include listbox and list ctrl?

If it's simple textual data, you can use a multiline edit box.

Nope he can't use multiline edit control, his problem is solved now, he solved it by generating the control on runtime! Smile | :)

Well, yours is a bad question.
Roughly speaking, from the programmer point of view (you know, this is a forum for programmers), there's not a big difference between a DVD and a CD (apart of their capacities).

Visual Studio 2008

I have used VC6++ for several years. I am thinking about getting Visual Studio 2008. A friend of mine has it and I was playing around with it. I have a couple of simple quesitons.

I didn't see any option to create an exe file with static libraries. I saw where you could create installation packages but I like the ability to create a standard exe where the user doesn't have to install anything. Can this be done with VC++ 2008?

Also, will I be able to install Visual Studio 2008 without it breaking the Visual Studio 6?

The reason I am considering 2008 is because I cannot run VC6++ in debug mode when linking against the latest WinDDK release. Apparently that breaks debug mode.

There is option to staticaly link the MFC and CRT with the exe. Ttake Project->Properties->Use of MFC

If you put the necessary dll's in the same folder of your binary, you dont have to install anything special. isnt it?

Ya. It wont break anything of visual studio 6. I have vs6, vs2005 and vs2008 installed in my machine

As Naveen said, you can install VC++6.0 and VS2008 side by side without any problems and you can create link to CRT and MFC statically. However, VC 6.0 compiler is not very standard compliant and VC 2008 compiler is. What this means is that you might have to change your code syntatically in order to compile with VC 2008.

Thanks for the quick answer. I believe I will go ahead and get VS2008 and start learning it. Since I will be able to keep VC6++ installed I can maintain existing projects until I get them switched over.

I have a program in c builder and I have several buttons that access sounds. How do you play several sounds at once? For example if you press a button while running a sound it will interrupt the present one. I use the PlaySound function. Thanks!

What are the files to keep with the static c/c++ lib after it was built in debug mode to enable its source code step into debugging from some executable linked to it?

E.g. there are .obj, .ncb, .idb, .pdb etc... files after the build. Which ones are related to step into the lib code?

.pdb is required for this - it's the debug symbols. I believe that's all you need.

I want to make a game of TicTacToe. WhenI resize the window I want to appear more buttons on the interface. From a matrix of 3x3 to 4x4 etc up to 9x9, depending on how much I resize the window. How do I do this?

I will make a free web site design to whoever provides me with a working answer (and something extra for the full program of playing tictactoe).
