By sending command line argument from one application to another.

This might work, I would appreciate if you could post a link to some
code demonstrating how to cause a vb app to accept and issue command lines.
The data transfer rate needs to be very fast so I'm not 100% sure on this.
Still this seems like a bit of a workaround. My original thinking was to implement something like the old com object interface, but I understand this is not really part of the new .net concept, so what is the equivalent? Is this an overkill for this type application?

I have thought about it a bit and command lines are not good. The data transfer is about once a second. I can't have my standard I\O hijacked by some application listening for command lines. What if I want to use other command lines while the program is running?

If transfer rate is high, then go with webservice.

For your, albeit brief, description of the requirements, I'd say .NET Remoting over an IPC Channel would be a good choice. You can read up on your communication options here[^].

Thanks,
This was what I was looking for. I am kind of a newbie to .net and the amount of classes is staggering. There is usually also no connection between object class names in the microsoft documentation to what they actually do, so figuring out what you need is quite difficult.

That's what the namespaces are for. Granted, I'd probably like to see some sub-namespaces in there to makes things a little easier, but that would break a ton of existing code if that suddenly changed.

Hi,
I am looping through the rows and columns of a dataset like this:
' Loop thru the rows
For i = 0 To ds.Tables(0).Rows.Count - 1
' Loop thru the columns
For j = 0 To ds.Tables(0).Columns.Count - 1
Response.Write(ds.Tables(0).Columns(j).ColumnName & ": " & ds.Tables(0).Rows(i).ItemArray.GetValue(j) & "<br />")
Next
Response.Write(vbCrLf & vbCrLf)
Next
I just used a lot of prints to see what the output is. I will need to update the records, or insert them, but this check is easy. I need there to be an ID column because this is my primary key. The column names correspond to the field names in the product table. Is there a way of checking, or a search to see if a column names actually exists instead of looping through the fields individually? Or should I just create a function to check this?
I need to check if an ID column exists because this is my primary key, this key is used to either update an existing record, or inserting a new record.
Regards
ma se

Wouldn't .Select() and a bit of tweak around it accomplish the trick for you?
|
|
|
|
|
You can use
if ds.Tables(0).Columns.Contains("theID") ...
To find out if a column with the specified name exists in the table

Hi all,
I was wondering if it is possible to have a custom tree view with three check boxs beside each node(right side if possible) which have events attached to them. What I had in mind is somthing like this
-MainTitle
|----Child [] [] []
|----Child [] [] []
|----Child [] [] []
|----Child [] [] []
I am only new to VB.NET, so I'm not sure if this has been done or even can be done.
Thanks,
Nathan

It can be done. It would take creating an entirely custom control to do. This is not something someone new to VB.NET would normally be able to do.
For an example of a custom TreeView control, look at this[^] and see if you can follow it.

i am using crystal reports (the inbuilt tool of visual studio 2005).Is there any option which loads the reports with less access time.

hi sonia,
i have also face this problem. This problem occurs only first time because this time files(related to crystal report) load into the memory so next time reports loads quickly.
one option is load crystal report at startup of your application(take care of visiblity of your report at startup) so next time when you load a report , it takes less time.
Hope this helps

up till now, i don't found solution to this problem. one option is load crystal report at startup but from this option startup takes long time.

There is no solution. What you're seeing is the time it takes to startup the Crystal Reports runtime. There is simply no way to get around this.

So you are going to develop an ERP solution. Are you freelancing or working for a company? Any way I dont think you might get help here because logics of ERP solutions are always kept secret.
Any way best of Luck

I am working for one company.
I have already created the prjoect whcih is almost over.
I just want to confirm if something etc can be added in the purchase module.
Anyways thanks for reply.

You can actually go through a couple of open source ERP solutions which might guide you further. I know of a Java based open source ERP (Compeire right?) that is good.
|
|
|
|

Yes i was just going through same.
I have downloaded it and installed enterprisedb database also.
After installation of database when i try to install Compeire then it asks for some confuguration and In the system password it gives me error,
Error JDBC Connection and then my database name and location?
Wt could be the reason?

I am working on a game that requires knowing the distance between two objects on the screen. In other words point 1 and point 2 put into a function and the radius of (or actual distance between ) the two points returned by the function. Game pieces need to be able to calculate their "close neibors" and their "far neibors" for my program to work correctly. So far I've sent in point 1 to a function that returns an array of points that make up a circle. I then use the circle returned to try and calculate whether point 2 is inside or outside of the circle. This method is a mess and is not very accurate most of the time. Since VB.NET doesn't have a neat function for this like rectangle.contains(point) I'm a little lost because my geometry is very very rusty. Can somebody help me with a simple and quick function for this?
Thanks.

Hi Dan,
Perhaps you should consider forgetting the idea of areas around the game pieces and think more in terms of distances.
In other words, only determine the distances between all pieces, subtract their "personal space" from these distances, and you end up with which is (too) close and which (too) far.
This way you also do not need to store a whole lot of data in memory that you won't ever even use. Instead you only get two values per game piece: position and personal space.
The following function may be of use to you:
<br />
Public Function RoundToSignificance(ByVal number As Integer, ByVal significance As Integer) As Integer<br />
'Round number up or down to the nearest multiple of significance<br />
Dim d As Double<br />
d = number / significance<br />
d = Round(d, 0)<br />
RoundToSignificance = d * significance<br />
End Function
With it you can determine for instance in which direction a game piece should preferably (not) move.
Frappydan wrote: calculate whether point 2 is inside or outside of the circle
If the idea is to make a game piece react when another game piece comes within its bounds, you simply look at the distances after a piece has moved. This way it is also much easier to take into account special rules areas or obstructions, and such.
Hope this is of help to you,
Johan
My advice is free, and you may get what you paid for.

If you know the coordinates of the objects you can work out the magnitude of the displacement (vector)
formula is:
|vector| = sqrt((x*x) + (y*y) + (z*z))
so the vector would be pointA - pointB.
Hope I have understood you and that this helps.
this is a quick post as i am in a rush so i may have missed something out - post again if i have not been clear.
Thanks
Dan
