A scheduled task? (hmm, thats twice I've written that in 10 mins, was the other one you as well?) Create your program as a comand line or windows app that automatically shuts itself down and add a scheduled task to run it when you want (might need a batch file for that, not sure)

You can read your file bytes from the database and then stuff those bytes into a response which has been given the appropriate header. I assume the bytes are coming from the DB, for you to not want the local file ?

Hello,
Does anyone know how to call a javascript function when an embedded ActiveX object is installed? I have a javascript function that requires that the embedded object is installed. As soon as the object is installed, I want to run the script. Any ideas?
Thanks!

OK, I have a solution. I'm using intervals to continually call the javascript function. In the function, I check to see whether or not the object is loaded. If it is, I execute the rest of the function and clear the interval.
If there is a better solution or this isn't a best practice, let me know!
Thanks!

I would like for some files to remained cached for a long time to avoid reloading them on page transitions (css, javascripts, logo image, etc.) but have other files expire and force them to be reloaded with each transition (context sensitive data).
Is there a way of setting different cache expiration times for individual files on the same page?

Thanks for the link. It looks like a really good resource.
I took a quick glance at it and it looks like I may be able to set up an .htaccess file that will accomplish what I need.
Now I need to set aside some serious reading time to go through the entire resource and see how much I thought I knew but really didn't.

Hello,
I have a website that I want to view with the PocketPC 2003 emulator. This website has an embedded ActiveX object. When I browse to this site with IE on my desktop, I get the option of installing the ActiveX control. However, when I browse to this site with the PocketPC emulator, I don't get an option to download it and the site does not work properly.
Can anyone tell me how to setup the PocketPC emulator to allow installation of embedded objects? Or if not, why?
Thanks a bunch!

Hello,
This is my first time to work on web development so I don't know from where to start.
All I know is that I have a web site already designed by Java Script and I need to modify it and add to it login forms, accessing DataBase, retrieveing information , sending emails programmatically...
So, first thing that come to my mind is to work with ASP.NET ( correct me if u have a better option please), if so I would like to know how to add the ASP forms to the Javascript.
Thanks,

I think you're a little confused. It sounds like you're being asked to modify a site that is going to be used, perhaps in a paid position. You need to buy a book and work through it if you want any chance of being able to do this.
An overview:
No website is 100% javascript. A web browser knows how to do three things:
1 - display HTML
2 - run javascript, which can modify HTML
3 - style HTML using CSS
It's possible you're looking at VB script code, in which case, your site is written in asp. ASP.NET is the best system I know of for writing web pages, but the real question is, what is the existing site written in, and how much work would it be to integrate those pages with ASP.NET, if that's what you intend to do ?
Every system, ASP.NET, J2EE, asp, PHP, all exist to take program code and use it to generate HTML. HTML is the only language that can cause a web page to display anything more than plain text.

Is it possible to detect the IP address & ban visitors from particular IP addrress from visiting the website or a page , like is it possible to detect the IP address using javascript or some other mean & match & block the visitors from the certain area.

I think that it is possible (I think that you need some server side code ...) but consider an IP address is not unique for a specific user.
-if multiple computers access the internet using a router (NAT) they all share the same IP, so you can block for example an entire office
-without a public static IP the same IP can be used from multiple computers (the IP is dynamically assigned by the internet provider)
-I think that there are some services used to hide your IP and browse the internet using another IP
I'm not an expert on this subject but I think that block the visitor only by the IP is not the right solution.

Writing VBScript in a "classic" ASP page...
I have several similar instances of the following code in a file called mypage.asp
<a href="mypage.asp?myAction=action1&myValue=1">Action1</a>
At the top of the same file, I have the following code:
Dim sAction: sAction = request.QueryString("myAction")
Dim sValue: sValue = request.QueryString("myValue")
' CHECK QUERYSTRING HERE
select case sAction
case "action1"
DoSomethingWith1(sValue)
case "action2"
DoSomethingWith2(sValue)
case "action3"
DoSomethingWith3(sValue)
case "action4"
DoSomethingWith4(sValue)
end select
Everything looks normal, right? (BTW, I typed this from memory so pardon any minor typos.)
Bizarre - Part 1
The first two "actions" are processed as you would expect. When I check the querystring at the indicated position (I throw up an alert box with the values in it), I see the values I expect. When it processes either of the 2nd two post-backs, the query string is empty.
Bizarre - Part 2
If I leave the select statement alone, but change the NAME of either querystring parameter, I get the expected querystring parameters
---------------------------------
Does anyone have any idea as to what I might have done wrong?

Are you sure that these functions don't change the values of QueryString collection?
Can you post a complete sample so I can run it locally and check it?

I'm not sure you could duplicate it on a simpler page. I haven't tried it yet myself, but I'm going to when I get to work today.

Okay - here's the page cut down to almost bare minimums
<%@ LANGUAGE="VBSCRIPT" %>
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<title></title>
<meta http-equiv="Expires" content="0" />
</head>
<body>
<%
sub Alert(sMsg)
Response.Write("<script type='text/javascript' language='javascript'>" _
& "alert('" & sMsg & "');</script>")
end sub
function DoSomething(sAction)
DoSomething = "Something was done for " & sAction & "."
end function
Dim myAction: myAction = request.QueryString("myAction")
Dim sRoomToProcess: sRoomToProcess = request.QueryString("roomid")
Dim sSomethingDone: sSomethingDone = ""
Dim bNeedRedirect: bNeedRedirect = false
Alert myAction & "\n" & sRoomToProcess
select case myAction
case "moveUp"
sSomethingDone = DoSomething(myAction)
bNeedRedirect = true
case "moveDown"
sSomethingDone = DoSomething(myAction)
bNeedRedirect = true
case "addRoom"
sSomethingDone = DoSomething(myAction)
bNeedRedirect = true
case "deleteRoom"
sSomethingDone = DoSomething(myAction)
bNeedRedirect = true
case "editRoom"
sSomethingDone = DoSomething(myAction)
case else
sSomethingDone = "Nothing was done (no parameters found)."
end select
if bNeedRedirect then
Response.Redirect("erBoard_roommgr.asp")
end if
%>
<a href="erBoard_roommgr.asp?myAction=addRoom&roomid=Room 1">Add</a><br />
<a href="erBoard_roommgr.asp?myAction=deleteRoom&roomid=Room 2">Delete</a><br />
<a href="erBoard_roommgr.asp?myAction=editRoom&roomid=Room 3">Edit</a><br />
<a href="erBoard_roommgr.asp?myAction=moveUp&roomid=Room 4">Up</a><br />
<a href="erBoard_roommgr.asp?myAction=moveDown&roomid=Room 5">Down</a><br />
<br />
<br />
<p>
<%=sSomethingDone%>
</p>
</body>
</html>
The problem appears to be that it's processing the Response.Redirect line BEFORE it gets the parameters from the querystring. Everything except the "EDIT" link causes a redirect (for purposes of example).
My desire is to actually clear the querystring after retrieving the values to avoid adverse effects caused by the user refreshing the page. I'd have no problem with eliminating the use of Redirect if there's a way to do so.

Hello,
I have firefox installed and I usually use it as my primary browser. However, I want to test my web application in IE. When I run the application it comes up in Firefox. If I open IE and browse to the default.aspx file and try to open it, IE refuses to open it (no error message or anything. IE just minimizes. When I bring it back up, it's still showing the page it was showing before I tried to open my default.aspx page).
I'm new to web development. Help on this will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

OK, so I'm an idiot. Obviously I can't open an aspx file directly as the server has to "serve" it up. So I go ahead and start the project in Firefox, then paste the url into IE, thereby requesting the page from IIS (does that sound right? Please correct me if I'm being a moron here!)
Still, how do hit F5 and launch the project in IE instead of Firefox?
Thanks!
Ian

Self-realization is a wonderful thing. Acknowledging that you have a problem is the first step towards fixing it.
You have to start IE and browse to the page - the URL is necessary so that it can load the appropriate css/js/php script files.
My advice is once you type in the url and successfully get the page to display in IE, bookmark it so you don't have to type it in again. (I only say this because you are a self-proclaimed idiot and I can't safely assume that you'd think of bookmarking it.)
