You could set up a sub-domain that is password protected and has its own database. Something like test.domain-name.com as a sub-domain of www.domain-name.com.
I do that for development and testing of new features to a production site so that only authorized people can gain access and the new features can be throughly tested on the actual web server that they will eventually be deployed on.
That model would also work for rolling out new web services. You could throughly test the services before cut over to the production domain.

Hi I am using AJAX in my my website.Its working fine on the localhost
but when i upload the application on to the server its giving the following error..
CS0234: The type or namespace name 'AsyncPostBackErrorEventArgs' does not exist in the namespace 'System.Web.UI' (are you missing an assembly reference?)
Any Help..PLz..

The server probably doesn't have the same version of AJAX ASP.NET installed as on your machine. Try to compare the versions.
|
|
|
|
|
the versions are same..
and moreover i hav another pagewith ajax in the same site and that page is working fine..
hmm..wat cud be the problem??
|
|
|
|

Well you could also compare the web.config files to see if both versions contain the same assembly references (under system.web/compilation/assemblies). Maybe the file on the production server is missing one that the local contains. If this is also not the case then I've run out of ideas..

Hi
In that case:
1. All your files should be in the main directory (C:\Inetpub\WWWRoot)
2. Go to Inetmgr -> Right Click on the Default Web site. Go to Documents Tab. Remove all the existing filenames. All your default page.
Now browse and check it.

Hello,
Is it possible to check whether a particular session of a user, for a URL is running or not from an external application or service?
For instance
If I log on to www.myweb.com with username = "me", Is it possible to check its current user's username, from a .net application or any other background process?
Thanks

Add an asmx to the application.
Modify the proxy and than you can query this from any of the application in world:->

hello,
i need your opinion on a design issue. we have a pretty large website with quite a lot of traffic written in asp. we are using a third party asp cache object, which makes us unhappy, due to lack of stability. now i'm confronted with the task to replace this cache object with something new.
-> the object should expose a com interface, so that it can be used from withing asp script
-> the object should be able to not only store strings, but objects as well
-> the cache manager should not run within the same process as iis
-> the cache object should be extensible, so that the a newly added server can access the same cache
-> we might port the site to asp.net sometime. it would be nice if we could the continue using the cache object
-> i'm pretty good at writing c# code but have close to no experience in writing atl/c++ stuff
how would you handle this? any ideas/help is greatly appreciated.

I need to display some information from a text log file. The information being called in is between a lead in and lead out in the log. Here is an example of what the log file looks like.
<++++++++++++++++++++>
<RECEIPT>1234
INFO INFO INFO
INFO INFO INFO
1234</RECEIPT>
<++++++++++++++++++++>
<RECEIPT>4567
INFO INFO INFO
INFO INFO INFO
4567</RECEIPT>
<++++++++++++++++++++>
As an example I want to display just the INFO for receipt 4567 and not the <RECEIPT> lines or the <+++++> lines.
I have been playing with the readfile.asp page and it will read the entire file and display it now I just need to limit that to what is between the receipt lines.
Any help will be appreciated. New to asp and web dev.

You'll need to modify the program so that rather than reading from the file and immediately outputting it, you actually look for the start and end lines, and only output the data between them.

Im with you....the question is how

3) Do you really want a would be freelancer beginner to do this project?
only two letters away from being an asset

3) .NET Framework installed (for VS 2003 1.1 or later, for VS 2005 2.0 or later)
4) A web site set up in IIS
5) An FTP account set up to access the web site
FTP works fine. You can make Visual Studio deploy directly to the FTP site.

Yes. And What version?
nishant sebastian wrote: 2) does he have a domain name? (should he have a registered domian name for this web app, if all the users are in the organization intranet located world wide, if that is possible)
If he already has a intranet accessible by all employees, your application can be linked into to the homepage. Else, if you want your application to have a separate URL accessible over www, you need a domain.
nishant sebastian wrote: s FTP method the best means to deploy the web applicaion to IIS, once development is complete on my machine?
FTP is OK. But if you're using VS professional, you can use the "Publish" feature to deploy your application. The "Publish" feature is quite comprehensive and covers almost everything related to deployment of a web site.
Additionally.
3) What version of .NET does your client have? If he's 1.1, would he consider upgrading to 2.0?
4) How're you going to manage security? (Authentication and authorization). I dont believe that he'll want the users to remember an additional username and password for your application.
And as for your proposition, a windows application developer can quite easily get lost when developing web apps. You must be ready for some quantum shift in your thinking.
All the best!

nishant sebastian wrote: 1)If i am using VS.NET 2005 for development with IIS 5.1 what is the minimum required version of IIS that shud be installed in the prod server?
That technically wont matter. But I'd reccomend IIS v6.0. You'd have some configuration issues when you first try to run a ASP.NET site built in .NET 2.0 when you're using IIS 5.x.
nishant sebastian wrote: 2)How would i able to ask him whether he has an intranet?
I'm sure his office will have an IT dept. Maybe you can get this clarified from them. Anyway, deployment is the last of your problems, and it wouldn't impact your design or development in any way.
nishant sebastian wrote: why I am doubting is that the app to be devloped is for just 10 to 12 users located worldwide and no prospective users for now
Hmmmm....this requires a public URL, so maybe they access over the internet.
nishant sebastian wrote: If there is an intranet then i assume windows authentication will suitable, am i right?
Not necessary. Windows authentication requires Active Directory. If their network has different platforms like unix, windows, macs etc, AD would have been ruled out. Also, if they access the site over internet, Windows Authentication can be ruled out. So clarify this with them and put in your own authentication infrastructure.

Ok so Im a beginning developer for my web siteand I need some help. I want to make it so that when I click on the program I want to download a small window opens up and displays its information that is in an xml file:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>
<products>
<download id="bustin' blox">
<name>Bustin' Blox</name>
<file_size>2 Mb</file_size>
<summary>Our version of Brick. Only One Level</summary>
<version>1.0.0</version>
</download>
<download id="">
<name></name>
<file_size></file_size>
<summary></summary>
<version>...</version>
</download>
<download id="">
<name></name>
<file_size></file_size>
<summary></summary>
<version>...</version>
</download>
</products>
I have found some javascript for the window, but I am having trouble editing it
(in the external file):
var win = null;
function NewWindow(mypage,myname,w,h,scroll){
LeftPosition = (screen.width) ? (screen.width-w)/2 : 0;
TopPosition = (screen.height) ? (screen.height-h)/2 : 0;
settings =
'height='+h+',width='+w+',top='+TopPosition+',left='+LeftPosition+',scrollbars='+scroll+',resizable'
win = window.open(mypage,myname,settings)
}
(the html):
<a href="Downloads/programs/games/bustin'_blox.exe" onclick="NewWindow(this.href,'name','730','400','yes');return false">Bustin' Blox</a>
Any help?
