I've got a service program that runs, is stopped by the Service Control panel, appears to exit cleanly (at least that's what all my logs tell me), yet in the Event Viewer, there's an entry claiming the exe faulted! What gives? Any clues as to what would cause this? Are there any special build settings I need to use (It's a standard C++ app).
Should note that this is a 32 bit exe running on Windows 2003 Server (64 bit). When run on the 32 bit version it runs fine.

Do you want to deface them or stop others from defacing yours?

Hi,
I bought a vps for experimenting.
I want to run a c program as a separate process like apache (or a thread).
I have the basic setup and i use putty to maintain the server.
I dont have cpanel.
How to run a c program which will be listening in a free port?

I wasn't too sure where to put this - please suggest alternative locations (and chastise me if necessary!) if you haven't got a helpful answer...
The company I work at is in the process of virtualising all their servers and is taking a snapshot of the live database server and wants to use this as an image for dev and test environments so that all they're all standardised. I'm currently going through the process of changing server names etc; does anyone who has experience of this have any pointers for things I'll need to check that I'm likely to have missed?
TIA

Ensure all service packs and updates are applied before taking the snapshot. If you don't this can come back and bite you much later on.

Cheers Pete - I think the live box is all up to date so hopefully that's taken care of, but I'll be having a check to make sure!
I was actually thinking more about any conflicts that could arise since I'm effectively using a duplicate of the live box (all the data servers are in the same subnet so are all visible to each other). I'm doing the obvious like changing SQL instance names, rebuilding maintenance plans that use SSIS, changing user credentials. Can you think of any others?

Test it, re test it then test it again and if possible put the dev stuff on a separate network.
If all else fails blame the sys admin, unless you're doing that role in which case blame your manager for not hiring a suitably qualified sys admin.

Should we assume from:
moon_stick wrote: changing server names etc
that you have also already looked at IP's - either changing IP's, or using isolated subnets? Or your Test / Dev environments are already partitioned on the network?

Use Set_parms command to change IP and hostname
change it to new value and reboot.
#set_params hostname
#set_params ip_address

I especially like the orange rubber walls - very soothing. The water bottles hanging inverted on the wall, along with the cedar shavings on the floor make it right homey in here.
