You really will get mad, when you would see what they charge for that crap. Twice or more of your salary.

As a consultant, I find that the situation is usually the reverse, where the in-house staff have no SCM, and hack things directly on their system. My first task I usually do in those cases is to a) get everything under version control, b) set up a clean, consistent build process, c) document all of this, and d) bill for all work done.

I'd be much obliged if you'd come and do that for our lot.

I might ask him about the potty training.

True, the key word being 'if'.
In this case it's kinda good that they didn't have it, BUT also quite worrying in general.

The other day my father was trying to copy 12 GB from the flash to the PC. But then he had a wonderful idea. He somehow knows the recycle bin folder was in the hard drive. He deleted the files because he thought the files will be on the recycle bin on C: and then he will click restore and they will be restored on the hard drive. And all the files will be copied on the PC in seconds. I laughed so hard I almost had asthma
Amazing the way old people think...

There are times I'm glad my father uses a Mac.
Did you see the "Dumb Things People Do?" Loung thread the other day?

In his defense, this old guy wants to know if your father can spell "genius"?

I thought my Dad was displaying his final act of dumb stubbornness when he wouldn't get on the internet and even gave back the 486 I gave to him.
He and my mom are still not connected.
I run a PC (Antivirus anymore) shop and couldn't be happier about that.
It is not popular but I contend a good number of the world's population should do something other than operate computers.
It was all were forced onto them by the internet.
I tell them when their drive is going clunk cluck cluck that computer is a terrible place to put your memories (Remember shoe boxes?) And to back them up a lot cause you just can't trust them.
I'll stop here before I launch into a rant about WD scorpio blue drives. Suffice to say I have a pile of dead ones.

Insist on Black. Black is cool.

I'll second the WD Black...the only time I had a problem was because an Intel chip fried on my Prescott box and it fried the electronics on the WD Black HD...WD gave me a new one, no questions asked.
I use Green drives on my HTPC...haven't had any problems with those either.

I considered Green, but I leave my system running and I used to run Folding@Home, so I figured it would never get any rest, ergo I opted for Black.

Yeah, the box I leave running 24/7 has all black drives in it too...I do allow them to spin down which saves a lot of wear but it's a pain in the butt waiting for them to spin up all the time.

Saves lot of heat too - my NAS does that and it's fan hardly ever moves.
And heat is a killer for electronics as well as bearings - lowers the MTBF from my experience.

Very true...looking forward to trying those supposed 10TB SSD drives that Intel has been bragging about

Now I'd like four of those in a NAS, set up for RAID5!
But I'd hate the mortgage I'd probably need to get one...

That's for sure! ...prices on SSD's are definitely coming down some, though...was thinking of trying one for my C: drive by imaging the existing stuff off my old one...don't know if that would work or not though.
I'm not quite ready to replace this box yet, but it would be nice to give it a boost.

I know what you mean - my C is 1TB, so I'd need that size to mirror it - currently it's just over £300 for 1TB (Dabs[^]) and that's $550 Canadian.
Probably more than I want to spend upgrading this system - I'll probably want a faster processor, more ram, and Win10 as well when I update next.
