Ultrabook devices represent a new category for developers with a huge market potential. Powered by 2nd generation Intel® Core™ processors, Ultrabook devices support rich, secure application experiences and HD media. This article provides an overview of key features and the developer opportunity.

This article is in the Product Showcase section for our sponsors at CodeProject. These articles are intended to provide you with information on products and services that we consider useful and of value to developers.

Developers can now submit and distribute applications via the Intel AppUp(SM) Developer program to the latest experience in personal computers called Ultrabook™.

What's an Ultrabook™?

Ultrabook devices are the latest computing devices with the performance to keep up with modern users. Ultrabook empowers users with a productive worry-free system that wakes up in seconds, apps that launch in a flash, and social media that stays up-to-date even while asleep.

Developer Resources

Because Ultrabook devices are powered with the 2nd generation Intel® Core™ processors, they allow for engaging and secure application experiences that connect you with HD media and rich gaming experiences. Ultrabook devices are extremely thin and light, roughly the same thickness and weight of modern tablet devices, giving users the convenience and power to create, produce and share content while on the go.

For our developers, Ultrabook devices offer another great opportunity for more immersive apps, connected software, and HD screen resolutions. Ultrabook devices are 64-bit based devices initially shipping with Windows 7 with screen sizes between 11 and 13 inches. Ultrabook will support Windows 8 as it ships in 2012. Also in that timeframe we expect to see additional hardware
features that can support a modern mobile device experience with touch and sensors.

Initial Features (late 2011 and early 2012)

The Opportunity

From a developer perspective, Ultrabook represents a new category of devices with a huge market potential. A recent release from iSupply predicts Ultrabook devices will account for 40 percent of the notebook market by 2015. In addition, Ultrabooks have garnered a growing ecosystem support – major OEMs including Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Samsung, LG, and Lenovo have launched or announced an Ultrabook line of products.

Ultrabook devices are a strategic imperative for Intel; and Intel is investing heavily in the promotion of the category and development of the ecosystem.

Recently, Intel Capital announced a $300 million Ultrabook™ Fund to help drive innovation in this new category of devices. The Intel Capital Ultrabook Fund aims to invest in companies building hardware and software technologies focused on enhancing how people interact with Ultrabook, achieving all-day usage through longer battery life, enabling innovative physical designs and improved storage capacity.

In addition, the new $100 million Intel Capital AppUp(SM) Developer Fund will invest in software tools and services companies developing innovative applications and digital content for the mobile and PC ecosystem.

Development

Ultrabook devices bring together the performance and capabilities of today's laptops with tablet-like features and represent a convergence of devices. Ultrabook devices will deliver a highly responsive and secure experience in a thin, light and elegant design at mainstream prices. The blending of ultra performance with mobility will now allow developers to build new features and experiences. Mobile app developers can improve their users experience with higher processor and graphics performance. Apps focused on a PC/notebook experience will be able to benefit from context/touch capabilities and bring usage models and experiences never created before.

The Intel AppUp(SM) developer program offers a number of modern APIs and services for app developers to leverage to add value to apps, especially when distributed via a store like AppUp.
