Without knowing what you have studied this is going to be difficult. For instance, it would be pointless of me to suggest that you developed a solution to the Nurses Problem if you haven't done Genetic algorithms or AI. This is your opportunity to really shine, so rather than being limited to what seems like a good idea from a bunch of jaded developers, try to pick a topic that really interests you. You'll need that level of interest to keep you going as you progress with the topic - it's hard to keep motivated if the topic doesn't interest you, and you have no one to bounce ideas off.

If I were you, I would look to work on something where you have ready access to experts or you are an expert in this area. This is a great way to make sure that your requirements are fully formed and that you end up considering the so called "happy" and "unhappy" paths. Maybe you could reach out to local businesses to find out what problems they are facing and work together to solve one of their issues. This is a particularly good way to bolster your resume so that you can seek employment afterwards.

You may not realise it now, but this can be one of the most fulfilling projects you ever work on. I envy you.
