After working with Sharepoint for 1 year, my understanding is Sharepoint simply an Application Framework/Application Platform which can help us to build various types of application with very easily and securely. Content Management System(CMS) can be a good example for that. You can also build various custom team collaboration type application on Sharepoint which can provide various reusable component so you can easily build rich application. If you want to create workflow based application then also you can consider Sharepoint.
