I'm an IT student currently in my second year, I want to study VB.NET but my principal insists on learning Java. I want to focus more on .NET technology but he advised me that it is very essential for an IT professional to learn Java. So what should I do ?

PS: Java and VB.NET both are optional subjects at my college.

What's the problem? You think both is too many? Think again.

The whole idea of selecting just one is wrong. To understand things you really need to know several languages, and also you need to learn programming, something which goes beyond languages. Also, by many reasons it's better to start with C# rather than VB.NET. I explained it in my recent answer: From QBASIC to Contemporary Programming Languages.[^]. Please take a look at the whole discussion.

Also, it's very hard to advise something, but I can explain the problem. Many developers are really haunted by the problem of imprinting. Many develop strong bonding to their first favorite language so much, that it blocks their ability to perceive alternative ideas. Try to avoid it, hard to explain how. Use your brain and critical thinking, not the feel of comfort. You need to avoid such thing as sitting in a "comfort zone".

Well go for Java, then if required, the next step to C# and .Net world will be easier.

It should be a matter decided solely by you.
It depends on what area you wish to work in, and your ability, but why not learn both?

I would go with Java though, as VB is easier to learn afterwards should you need it.

You can go for java but i'll advice you that knowing several languages is not too much. I also started with java and later, i moved to other languages like php, vb.net, javascript. Now i have even started learning python, just few weeks ago. I'll tell you, .net world is easier and very very interesting. So understanding many languages is very good.
